Book Teaser 1: The death of a Hero
He stood alone and scared, he had come to this place out of instinct in an attempt to reach his family before the Elite Guard did, yet he was frozen with shock as the figure of a boy he could barely remember had somehow walked straight across his path. His fear was also for himself, would they still welcome him in? Had they been told he was a traitor and would they even recognize him? He quickly ran to the door that the boy had entered moments earlier, a door that seemed so familiar to him and one that he had stepped through so many times in the past. With his head resting against the cold metal, he listened for a while, but could hear nothing and nervously stepped back after finally mustering the courage to knock upon the hollow frame.
It seemed like an age before he heard movement, the sound of a lone person descending the stairs, he hoped it was her, hoped it wasn't a trap, and as the door swung open the tears welled within him. At first she seemed shocked, surprised even; probably at his roughened appearance and he expected fear to enter her thoughts. He knew they would have tried to turn her against him, yet she must have seen his heart deep within his eyes, must have known in that single instance that he was still the man she loved.
“Kyle!” She cried flinging her arms around him as she started to sob, an emotional moment that showered over both of them, almost washing his fears away.
“Oh Megan,” He cried as his hand ran softly through her hair, she smelled just like he remembered, a sweet smell that he had forgotten until now. He wanted to never let go, wanted to fly away with her, to leave this place and never return. “I've missed you so much.”
He looked around the room in excitement. “And Kimo, where's Kimo?”
“Oh Kyle.” She continued to sob uncontrollably, tears running freely down her cheeks, she looked strangely concerned, almost expectant. “Go while you still can…”
They both jumped visibly as the door behind them was slammed open and in an instance of dread Kyle realized he was too late, realized that it was all the trap he had suspected. He could hear the soft steps of a single person approach him from behind, and knew within his heart who it was, fearing for his life as he had done so in front of her father not so long ago.
“Why did you return traitor?” Gi Tion hissed, her hatred for him having built throughout her journey to this place. The man who had once been welcome into her family home, now shamed and disgraced with his treacherous deceit. “Did you think you could just walk in here and take away that which you love, did you give any such thought to me when you took away my father?”
He looked upon her for the first time in many years, she still looked young, very young, yet she held her poise with an air of confidence, she seemed so different from what he could remember. Her smooth white skin a stark contrast to her fathers disfigured hide, the faintest of decorations enhancing her ivory sheen. He looked around, trying to gauge how many guards there were, he could see only Gi Tion in the cramped front room, her glare burning into him, a glare of pure hatred. He moved quickly, leaping across the room and gathering Megan's hand within his own, his heart thumped as the adrenaline coursed through his body and he attempted in desperation to ascend the staircase, pulling Megan roughly up behind him. He was aware how unfit he had become, aware how deadly the Tion warrior was, yet he believed he could take them all away, believed he could end the pain today.
Then behind, he heard the sound of a sharpened blade being drawn, it seemed closer than he expected and he feared he had not been quick enough, there was a rush of air past his arm accompanied by the sound of fast cold steel, and the weight of Megan slowly started to fall away from him. Looking backwards, barely able to see through the tears in his eyes, he saw her falling, tumbling down the stairs, her left arm missing just below the elbow. He kept running, hearing his own screams echoing around him, destroyed in the image of his wife's beautiful face twisted in pain. He ran into the first room he could find, not knowing what he was doing anymore, looking for some kind of weapon to defend his love from the savage Tion, no longer concerned for his own safety, no longer in control.
That was when he saw him, the boy huddled on the bed, the sheets clasped tightly to his chest as he sobbed into them uncontrollably. What must he be thinking, how wrong had this all become?
“Kimo?” Kyle started, his hand outstretched in a gesture of friendship, trembling from the rush of adrenaline and the sickness he felt within. Kimo looked at him, his eyes slowly starting to widen as he suddenly broke out into a piercing scream, he didn't recognize the stranger, why should he? He had not seen him for so very long and all he could hear was the scream of his mother, all he could see was the blood on the strangers clothes. It had all turned so sour, the images Kyle had dreamt, of them all huddled together on a starship traveling to a new life had been suffocated under the dark cloak of Gi Tion. That was when he became aware of noises from behind. The elite guard were inside the house and flooding up the staircase, he didn't have much time, he wanted to try and explain, wanted the boy to know the truth, but he was young, far too young, he would never understand, not now. Then it hit him, even in this commotion, with this pain inside, he realized a path, an action that may give his boy a true life away from the Tion, something he owed him for all of this horror, and an action that he knew would be his last.
Quickly he slammed the door shut, throwing furniture frantically in front of it as the weight of the elite guard pushed against the other side. The boy was still screaming as Kyle jumped upon him, knocking him from the bed and landing heavily upon him on the floor. The boy's shriek finally trailed away, his eyes widening in terror as he looked at the knife the stranger now wielded. The banging at the door was louder, more of them were there, and Kyle thought he could still hear Megan screaming downstairs as the furniture slowly started to slide with the weight of the guards, desperate to reach him. Quickly, he brought the knife down on his only son, seemingly an act of madness, yet for all his pain, all he had endured, it was the most sane action left open to him. As the knife sunk into Kimo's shoulder, he yelped with pain, a look of total shock in his eyes, a stream of tears traced down each cheek.
“I'm sorry.” Kyle whispered as he heard the door being forced wide open. His eyes were blinded with tears, his breathing reduced to pathetic unsynchronized gasps. Frantically he fumbled in his pocket, retrieving the probe he had failed to plant earlier that day, and pushed it deep into the child's wound with his thumb. Kimo screamed with pain, not realizing what had happened as the probe awoke, sparking to life and burrowing deep within his arm and out of sight.
Several hands wrapped around Kyle, as the guards finally broke into the room and pulled him away from the distressed child, throwing him violently to the floor. Gi Tion strode forward, staring in total bewilderment at the scene that had unfolded, she could only imagine that the strike on his wife had tipped him over the edge, she had always suspected a deep rooted weakness within this man.“You see boy.” She addressed the trembling child as a nearby guard dragged him to his feet. ”You see what an Agent of Dark Hour is capable of? You see why they must all die?” She pulled the body of his mother from behind her into the view of the destroyed child, she lay motionless, saturated in blood, the arm that had so often held him tightly to her heart, now gone.
“Mother!” He screamed, hardly able to bare the vision in front of him, unable to comprehend the sequence of events that had just unfolded. The guard released him, expecting him to sob upon her lifeless body, but he ran, ran as fast as he could away from the chaos, clambering down the stairs and out of sight. Gi Tion raised her hand, stopping the guards from pursuing him.
“Let him run.” She whispered. “He will always hate Dark Hour, always hunt them down. His father has turned him into the very thing he tried to stop him becoming.” A smile broke across her face as she looked towards the broken man. “You are his Dark Hour now…”
He looked up at her, a mix of fear and lost will, how had his life come to this, how could he of hurt everything that was dear to him? had he not sworn to always protect them? Gi Tion placed an elegant foot onto his shoulder, leaning forward to stare deep within him, knowing that her sweet breath would be the last thing to fill his senses. “And this is for my father…” She whispered, slowly raising the sword before her, his wife's blood still dripping from the sharp cold blade, as it dropped down upon him.
Kimo broke away from the house, running screaming into the street. Many people had gathered on hearing the commotion, concerned at the cries of a boy in the darkened road. He did not know the direction he took, but somehow saw the familiar figures of his friends in the distance, Amanda stood before him alongside Jessie who had rushed to meet her and their embraces were firm as he stumbled into them from his ragged run. In the distance he heard the stranger scream, he was glad, he wanted nothing more than to hear that, wanted nothing more than to kill them all.
The three friends huddled together on the ground as his eyes stared out from their protection, blank and empty into the darkness that was the day.
