The world of SPYNN
What is a SPYNN?
The word SPYNN is derived from the first machines that were created to save the world after the death of the Sun. These earlier machines were piloted manually and are a stark contrast to the modern remote controlled SPYNN's currently in service, they were known as Single Pilot Yovian Net Nodes.
What is Yovian Energy?
Yovian energy was only visible to mankind after the Suns demise, when it was discovered that the strange lights in the sky were actually a very dense and usable energy source. The realization of the Yovian supplies lead to the construction of the first generation Re-Breathers, giant machines that would span the earth, bathing the dying world with heat and light and allowing mankind to survive far beyond its natural end.
How does a SPYNN work?
The modern SPYNN is flown to a supply of Yovian energy by a host ship, before being jettisoned into space to begin the harvest. The SPYNN pilot will control the SPYNN via a console on the host ship, very similar to the simulation on this site. The SPYNN has a number of cycles it must go through in order to successfully retrieve Yovian energy.
First the SPYNN must force some of the energy to collect together and be drawn towards it, this is known as pulsing and is done to allow the modern SPYNN a greater range without depleting it's own energy source. In essence the gathered energy (referred to as Absorbers) can be attached to the SPYNN and used to amplify the attraction of the other energy in the area without costing the SPYNN any loss of it's own resources. Once docked onto the SPYNN, the absorbers can then be used to collect a large amount of Yovian energy before they become depleted and rejected into space.
Problems occur where different types of Yovian Energy (there are 78 listed types known to the Academy) are present in the same sector, this is where the skill of a good pilot is required, as it is imperative for the energy to be collected by the correct absorber. Failure to do this will deplete the SPYNN's core energy and eventually result in an explosion.
Unlike earlier SPYNN's which were mechanical, current models are themselves constructed from a managed concentration of Yovian energy. This allows the SPYNN the remarkable ability to regenerate itself if such an explosion occurs. This is, of course, only possible if the SPYNN's core energy is of a high enough level to succeed.
A SPYNN Pilot is regarded as the ultimate celebrity in a world where their actions could seal the fate of millions, they constantly battle to feed the Re-Breathers ever increasing appetite, saving lives every single day.
Who are Dark Hour?
Dark Hour are a dangerous sect of fanatics who believe it is not in the interest of man to prolong a death that nature claimed many decades ago. They have plotted the destruction of the SPYNN and Re-Breathers since their birth. The threat of Dark Hour lessened after the War of the Red Fields. A war that resulted in the battered Dark Hour army escaping into the darkness of space, only to return to Earth in more tactical and some would say more effective methods of attack.
Why do so many people follow Dark Hour?
This is a question on many people minds, a question that Kimo had often asked himself, and a question that in some ways he wished had never been answered. in the future, the past may be far more sinister than the history you were taught would lead you to believe...
